Finding himself bored again, Jack has done yet another meme to pass the time seeing as how all the work outside is done and it's just going to be a blazing inferno outside today. "You okay Miss Kaycee? You look a little flushed."

Flushed? Oh, it much be...uh...the heat. It's been very hot lately. Perhaps I have a sunburn...

[She composes herself a bit better by standing up straighter. Still blushing slightly though.]

I wouldn't worry too much about those results. You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.

He glances at the results again and smiles.

"Ya mean the thing that says we're gonna get married and have seven kids? Nah, I don't take it seriously. 'S just something off the computer."

[That sunburn is getting worse though.]

I just mean, if you've read anything about me on the internet, most of it probably isn't true. I certainly don't think your name really stands for "Idiots Out Wandering Aimlessly".

He looks closer at her.

" But I know what ya meant. And I don't think it stands for 'I Owe the World an Apology' either, so o'course I don't believe it. If I did, I'd believe you'd have a 'Screw Missouri' festival."

[She shakes her head and smiles slightly he gets closer.]

...I wouldn't call it a 'festival' exactly...

He backs up a little and sighs.

"Alright, I'll believe ya. Just worried me a little. "

[She blinks at him in suprise.]

You mean you haven't heard of it? We call it "The Border War" every time Louis and I get together to play...well, pretty much anything.

He smiles sheepishly.

"Miss Kaycee, ya got to remember I don't get out very much. The only thing that I think of is the Bleeding Kansas thing, and that's just 'cause I read about it."

[She glances down at her hands sadly.]

Y-yeah, that was what started it...
Things were bad...very bad...back when I first became a state.

Jack bites his lip and looks down.

"Sorry. I shouldn'a said anything..."

[She glances up at him again with a small smile, giving him an encouraging look to show it's alright.]

I shouldn't let it bother me so much. It's not like Louis and I are still fighting anymore...at least not physically anyway. Besides I'm not alone anymore. If anything else were to happen today I have people I can rely on now, and that means a lot.

I'm sure we all have our scars. Mine are probably no worse than anyone else's here.

He relaxes a little, relieved she isn't going to hit him or anything.

"Right. If it helps, any time Lou and I have fought, it was either really stupid or we were drunk. Just goes to show how pointless lots of it is. And yeah, yer right about the scars. We've all had weird pasts and there ain't much we can do about it."

[She gives him a genuine smile, she's often content when people are agreeing with her.]

I'm sorry for getting so serious. I'm sure we all have some happy stories to tell too. I guess it's just the bad things that stick out so much in our minds sometimes.

"Right. Like there's lots of good things that happened to me. Way more than bad things, that's for sure."

"Ahh, good planting seasons? Er..."

He suddenly looks frustrated.

"Maybe it's one of those things where you can't think of the good things. Coming here was good. I know that for sure."

I guess that's the problem with being farmers. The good times are usually the ones when there's nothing going on.

"Yeah, that's true. I couldn't think of anything else since everything just kinda seems routine for me. At least you can relate."

After dealing with Louis, doing my part to try to police the Wild West, and living through the Dust Bowl, a little peace and quite is really all I want these days.

I was a little worried when I first got here. ...I wasn't used to so many people being around, and HQ seemed so...random.

But Matthew and Mikey were here, and then I met William and Sven, who are both very kind.
I'm glad I came now, even if I didn't really have a choice in the matter.

"I dunno. I was just so used to kind of being...obsolete or somethin'. All I had was peace and quiet. So yeah, it was a little shocking for me because all of a sudden, there was so much going on.

Then I got to see Lou, and met Will. Then I met you so it hasn't been too bad since."

It usually is very nice here...most of the time, but... why would you think you were obsolete at home?

"Ehh, just didn't feel like much of a big deal. I mean, I don't do much 'cept farm."

He shakes his head and smiles.

"Hey, gotta quit being depressing, right?"

But farming is very important! Without all of us in the Corn Belt working so hard, the rest of the world wouldn't have enough food to eat. You, me, Mikey, Elijah,...and yes, even Louis...just because we may not be the flashiest of states, doesn't mean we're not just as valuable as everyone else.

[Proudly, she puffs out her chest a bit, pointing to herself.]

They don't call me "The Breadbasket of the World" for nothing, you know.
